About DCJS
DCJS plays a key role in helping to ensure its local law enforcement, community, and criminal justice partners have the resources, technology, and support necessary to solve, reduce and prevent crime; strengthen communities; and improve the lives of New Yorkers. The agency’s responsibilities are divided among the following offices and units:
- Crime Analysis and Strategic Partnerships

Through these program areas, DCJS provides direct training to law enforcement and other criminal justice professionals; maintains basic training and police and peace officer decertification records; oversees a law enforcement accreditation program; ensures Breathalyzer and speed enforcement equipment used by local law enforcement operate correctly; manages criminal justice grant funds; analyzes statewide crime and program data; provides research support; oversees county probation departments and alternatives to incarceration programs; coordinates youth justice policy; and provides support to law enforcement agencies handling missing persons cases.
The agency also maintains criminal history records, fingerprint files and the state’s Sex Offender Registry; performs background checks for employment and licensure; administers the state's DNA Databank in cooperation with the New York State Police Crime Laboratory; and provides staff support to eight independently appointed policy-making boards.
DCJS also has employment opportunities within its Administrative, Business Analysis, Finance and Budget, Human Resources Management, Internal Audit and Control, and Legal Services offices.

Telecommuting Program and Alternate Work Schedules
DCJS, the Commission of Correction, and Office of Victim Services offer a partial telecommuting program. DCJS also offers alternate work schedules, including compressed pay period and compressed pay week, where operationally feasible.
Paid Family Leave
New York State has a nation-leading Paid Family Leave Program that provides protected, paid time off to bond with a newly born, adopted or fostered child; care for a family member with a serious health condition; or assist loved ones when a spouse, domestic partner, child or parent is deployed abroad on active military service, among other circumstances.
Employees also may be eligible for assistance through the Family and Medical Leave Act.
